Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to question specific rulings made by the official, echoing the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
